Whether you are installing a brand new bathroom or renovating an existing one, there is a lot more to consider than just a colour scheme. With a myriad of choices available in basins, baths, showers, bidets and storage space, it’s difficult to know where to start.

Initially it’s important to look at who the bathroom is used by. Is it a family bathroom with kids darting in and out, numerous baths, showers and toilet runs or is it an adult bathroom. Whatever the case, it’s important to look at what will work well.

A family bathroom needs to focus on practicality and functionality. Wipe clean surfaces, good sized baths, easy to use showers and ample storage space. It is possible to create a magazine style looking family bathroom whilst considering it’s usability.

Large cupboards work well at low level, hidden beneath sinks and if the cupboard doors are painted and handle free they blend in beautifully with the tiling, drawing the eye line upwards. Inserting a false shelf above a back to the wall toilet gives extra space for storage and utilises what would be dead space. Large mirrors and generous lighting adds a touch of luxury to whatever bathroom you decide to choose.

Ideally a double basin works great in a family bathroom, if there is space. A large bathtub is a must, and if there is no space for a separate shower or wet room, then install a shower fitting onto the bath itself. Having the taps in the center of the bath side, against the wall gives the spa effect and is proving extremely popular.

Flooring is very important in bathrooms, and tiles are the most popular choice. Slate tiles being the number one on everyone’s list right now. If possible introduce underfloor heating, or a radical radiator and large heated towel rail. Comfort and warmth are essential in the bathroom!

Of course there is an abundance of choice for designs and suppliers for complete bathrooms and bathroom utilities and sometimes you need some help in choosing what is right for you. As important as your choice is however, it’s as equally important to get the right plumber and heating engineer to install your bathroom. Don’t try and cut corners with the installation- use a reliable, efficient and trustworthy plumber.
